Coxy is a lovely bloke, my other half and the coder of this very website as well as many others. He is a web and print designer and works for Opera Software. He also dabbles in illustration and photography and his baking skills are second to none. Beware of his jokes though as they are really terrible.
HavaMedia is my workplace when I’m not fiddling with my own work. I work with a lot of web developers and we make social media websites. Its the best office ever because we have a darts board and an XBox and a wicked pinball machine. I think that they let me work there because I bring them treats occasionally.
Nexus Art Cafe is probably the most unusual, intriguing and beautiful little cafe and arts space that you might ever come across if you find yourself in rainy old Manchester. Its a cafe/exhibition space/charity and loads of other little things. If you live in Manchester, I suggest you check it out. I used to work there helping out with arts workshops and events, promoting things that were going on and decorating it with my illustrations. Its a wonderful place to see live music and on a Saturday night they are open 2am-6am so you can get some nice food instead of a kebab on the way home.
Society 6 is a lovely website where you can also view my work, but I usually update this website more often. If you are a creative its a great online space to get involved and put your work out there.
Behance is a similar portfolio website which i should also update more often than I actually do. I promise to spend an evening one day soon with a packet of biscuits and cup of tea putting effort into sorting both of these profiles out! Another one thats mighty good for the illustrators and designers that are reading this.
Tellison are one of my favorite bands and I’ve had the pleasure of doing work for them a few times. SH and his lady even came to Oslo and drank a few beers with Coxy and I one lowly winters evening. There are four of them. They are boys. They play Fender Telecasters and Jazz Basses and Gibson Melody Makers and 1960s Ludwig drums. They care a lot and practice a lot.
Corridor 8 is a yearly art magazine funded by Arts Council England. Ive worked with them a few times, an absolute pleasure. Corridor8 is available to buy here, at key art book stockists and may be ordered from any book shop.
The AoI are the British Association of Illustrators, established in 1973 to advance and protect illustrator’s rights and encourage professional standards. The AOI is a non-profit making trade association dedicated to its members’ professional interests and the promotion of illustration.
Whilst they dont have the most aesthetically pleasing website ever, if you are an illustrator at any point in your career they are a brilliant resource for both keeping up to date with upcoming exhibitions and new illustrators and also the business and legal side of being an illustrator. This can be very confusing as us illustrators are often not blessed with a mind for business. As a member you can download templates for commision T&C’s and get great advice on how to price your illustrations over the phone. The forum is very good too.
Forrst is a fantastic design community which leans more towards web design and development than illustration really. You can upload projects that you are working on and other users give you useful advice and feedback on your work, this is great when you are working freelance and sometimes need a fresh perspective on a project.
Some of my favourite magazines include Anorak Magazine: The happy mag for kids, The Ride Journal: for bicycle fanatics, such as myself. Little White Lies, one of the best designed magazines around, focused on film.
Now for some of my favourite illustrators. Cem Dinlenmiş is a pretty rad illustrator, if you ask me! Ian Stevenson is a grotesquely delicious illustrator doing simple illustrations of strange characters. Maxwell Holyoke-Hirsch knocks out some very pretty illos indeed. Last but not least, Jim Stoten, a connoisseur of pattern and narrative.
Finally, some blogs that are good to kick back and procrastinate on. It’s Nice That showcase tasty tit-bits for your eyes to snack on. Lucy Sanderson is one of my old buddies from back in university, a brilliant read, she is a walking dictionary in a leopard print dress. One of my other mates based in London runs a blog and printed zine called Mind Over Matter. This aims to provide a platform for patients, public & practitioners to engage in discussion of their experiences of mental health issues on a common level. Some very interesting stuff.
